The Gypsy cob, Romany cob, Gypsy horse, Vanner, Tinker and the colored cob are all the same breed just named differently according to where abouts in the world they came from. Cobs are true to type, gentle sweet natured and known for their reliability.

Cobs have been selectively bred over many generations specifically for their nature, versatility, hardiness and dependability.

During the First World War the Gypsy cobs were bought by the army and shipped overseas. Their sure footing, sturdy and compact build was ideal for the army and these traits were utilized to pull cannons and carry regiments to and from the front line. However the army did not like the colored cob because of its poor camouflage and so cheap, colored horses were in abundance and became very popular for the Romany Gypsy who favored their flashy color.

Romany Gypsies strived to have the best horse and so selective breeding continued and the cobs were adapted to suit preferred shapes and sizes to suit particular needs. But the most important trait of the horse was its sweet nature so the whole family could be safe. This has evolved to make the cob one of the gentlest natured horses in the world as for centuries the gypsies would not tolerate an ill tempered horse.

Cobs have many different uses and are renowned for being very versatile. Typically used for pulling carts, agricultural loads they are now used for all equine disciplines. People have recognized the strength and stamina that the cob has along with its kind temperament and has become a very sort after breed.

Careful breeding today means that the gypsy cob stays true to type as it has done for generations. A true gypsy was known not be complete without a good horse and they strived to own the best horse they could which meant that the gypsy cob has evolved into a very well bred animal to suit the needs of a working family yet have a docile nature that blends in with family life. A gypsy’s wealth was often determined by the quality of its horse and so cobs were paramount to many families traveling the UK and Ireland for centuries.

Today there is a very diverse range of cobs available on the market with a stallion being able to reach 100,000 at auction, even without papers or a receipt. They have become very sort after, especially as more recently they have proved themselves as successful show horses, hacks, companions, riding horses and cart horses. Their divisibility alone is very appealing, along with their temperament means that the gypsy cob will continue to be popular still for many generations to come.
